My first recording trek.

The following recordings were made by me, using a simple binaural microphone rig that i constructed and a Sony MZ-NH700 Hi-MD Recorder.

The recordings were made between 9am and noon on February 9th, 2007 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in and around Veteran's Park. The following satellite image map shows the location of all five recordings.

The first three recordings were made in the area of Veteran's park near the south side McKinley Marina. The fourth recording was made on the north side of Veteran's park on the beach. The final recording was made on the Brady St. foot bridge over Lincoln Memorial Dr. The first three recordings are posted together due to their proximity. Each post contains a hand drawn map of the area in which the sound was recorded.

Three recordings at Veteran's Park near McKinley Marina

RECORDING 1

I spent perhaps twenty minutes following a small snow plow back and forth along a foot path in Veteran's Park near the marina.

This was the only recording in which my mics were handheld. I would walk to where I thought the best sounds were, attempting to get as close as I could to the plow. However, everytime I moved so did the snow plow, away from me!

A park and ride bus pulling into the lot at Veteran's Park.

For this recording my mics were sitting on a waist high concrete wall near a picnic shelter perhaps 25 feet from where the bus finally came to a stop. They were about a foot apart and remained perfectly stationary during the entire recording.


RECORDING 3

The wind rattled the bells atop the masts of many of the boats that were dry docked at the Milwaukee County Sailing Club.

For this recording my mics were stationed atop the chain link fence surrounding the dry dock area and were left stationary for about 10 minutes.

Waves striking an ice formation

RECORDING 4

On the small beach in Veteran's Park an ice shelf had formed, the waves crashing against it created small ice caves. For this recording I placed my mics on the very edge of the ice cave directly over the water, they remained stationary for about 10 minutes.

Please note, right and left are reversed in this recording. My right mic was on the left side of the ice cave and my left mic was on the right side.

RECORDING 5

Traffic passing directly beneath the Brady St. foot bridge.

For this recording I placed my left mic on the north side of the bridge and my right mic on the south side. The remained stationary on the edges of the bridge for about 5 minutes.

The red "X's" mark how my mics were positioned relative to the lanes of traffic and each other.
